The nervous system of the human body is a very complex structure. It comprises an extensive network of interdependent nerves that work endlessly to keep the entire body functional. Due to their interdependence, medical conditions affecting a particular region could sometimes be traced to a completely different part of the body.
Sometimes, these conditions could also be related to other diseases, and treatment cannot be administered until the actual underlying causes have been ascertained. For example, if you experience pain radiating from your lumbar region to your buttocks, and all the way down to the back of your leg, you could be suffering from sciatica—but then again, it may be another disease. How do you tell them apart?
A good idea is to examine and understand the specific symptoms associated with the pain. Sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy is a type of nerve wracking pain caused by an irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, arising from the nerve roots of the lumbar spine. It usually begins in the buttocks region and if left untreated, could progress down the entire leg.
For some patients, the pain can be severe enough to completely alter their lifestyles, preventing them from sitting or lying on their stomachs comfortably. For others, the symptoms could just be occurring erratically, but still has the potential to get worse. The pain is often described as a burning sensation, or like the feeling of electric shocks running from the lower back all the way down the leg.
A condition affecting the same regions with slightly similar symptoms and probably the same degree of pain, is the Piriformis syndrome. It is a neuromuscular disorder in which the piriformis muscle begins to twinge uncontrollably and cause pain. This muscle, which helps to stabilize the hip joint, is also located in the buttocks region close to the sciatic nerve, which is why it is often confused with lumbar radiculopathy. Other similar conditions include slipped discs and Sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
Given the vast underlying conditions that may cause sciatic pain, it’s always advisable to seek medical attention once the symptoms hit to determine the exact condition and begin treatment as soon as possible.
Treatment options vary, but they always begin with a thorough neurological examination to determine what part of the nervous system may not be functioning correctly. Some popular methods for sciatica relief include Brain-Based Therapy, spinal adjustments and Chiropractic manipulation.
