Signs and Symptoms of Neck Pain

    Aches and pains:

Neck pain patients usually experience pain around the neck area. This pain may radiate downwards to the shoulder or between the shoulder blades, and even to the arms and hands resulting into “Pin and Needles” or prickly sensation in the arm or hand (upper extremity paresthesia).

    Stiff and tense neck muscles:

The muscles in the neck may become tense, sore and feel hard to touch.

    Crepitus:

These are clicking and grating noises caused by ligaments rubbing against the neck bones, or by rough boney surfaces that are moving against each other as you move your head.

Torticollis (cervical dystonia or acute wry neck):

This is a condition where you develop muscle spasms that are responsible for the abnormal neck posture where you find yourself turning your head to one side. It isn’t a very common condition, but it’s really unpleasant.

    Headaches:

Headaches often involve the base of the skull, and refer to the sides of the head and around the sinuses. The most commonly associated type of headache is the migraines accompanied with marked agitation and nausea.

    Excessive tiredness and mental fogginess:

Only occurs in a case where the internal jugular vein and venous drainage of the skull via the foramen magnum is compromised. The mental fogginess can contribute to chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

    Feeling dizzy:

This especially happens when looking up or turning your head. The cause of this dizziness is attributed to the vertebral arteries being pinched due to alterations in the bones of the spine. If blood flow is reduced then the patient is likely to experience blackout – but not always.

    Other symptoms include:

    • facial pain
    • irritability (especially if the pain is interfering with your sleep)
    • upper back and/or lower back pain
    • inflammation of the spine
    • difficulty swallowing
    • lymph node swelling
    • pulsations
    • swishing sounds in the head

The stiffness of the neck muscles makes it so difficult to find a comfortable position on the pillow when sleeping. The headaches, sinuses, thyroid problems, lipping, and spurring are some of the lifestyle limitations that arise due to neck pain. Therefore, for you to have a long lasting neck pain relief, we recommend that you seek help from one of our medical specialists to help you figure out the root cause of the pain, and determine the exact treatment plan that will help you get rid of your condition.
