Before you start thinking about knee pain treatment, start by understanding what it is all about. Knee pain is a fairly common condition affecting people of virtually all ages. The symptom may begin acutely following exercise or injury or insidiously beginning as mild discomfort and worsens through time.
What causes knee pain?
Knee pain can be caused by simple things and may be resolved through home remedies and other form of simple therapies. It is advisable to be aware that being overweight can pose increased risk of developing knee pain over time.
Nonetheless, some of the identified causes of knee pain are the following –
- Baker’s Cyst
- Lupus or other connective tissue disorders
- Kneecap dislocation
- Iliotibial band syndrome (rare)
- Joint infections
- ACL/MCL injuries following trauma
- Torn cartilage/ligament
Although rare, it is important to know that bone tumors can cause significant knee pain as well.
What kind of therapy you should do at home?
If the knee pain has just started, you should take time to rest the affected joint and avoid activities that will worsen the pain, especially those that involve bearing weight. Within 24 hours following the knee pain, an ice pack should be applied for up to 15 minutes, at least four times. If the knee is swollen, you can elevate it to minimize the swelling and apply an ace or elastic bandage. You can take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as acetaminophen, for the swelling and pain and place a pillow beneath the affected area when sleeping.
However, if the pain felt on the knee is caused by extreme physical activity or overuse, the therapy is quite different. The pain may resolve on its own but you can prevent it from happening again by warming up before any physical activity and allow for cooling time right after. Stretching exercises will also help, especially those who will stretch the hamstrings and quads, which are essential anatomical parts within the vicinity of the knee.
If possible, you should reduce the amount of physical activity that you do especially when the knee pain is felt immediately after. Losing weight may become a very challenging feat if this is the reason why you are having pain, but it is not impossible. You can begin by jogging on a smooth, evenly soft surface like tracks, rather than running on cement, which can create a harsh impact on your lower legs, thereby affecting your knee.
It is important to seek a medical consult, especially if you’ve done every home therapy you could think of and the knee pain is gradually worsening. In these cases, a medical opinion is always a good option to prevent problematic consequences.
