As Seen On

My name is M.T. Shahab, M.D. The spine is one part of the body that is particularly vulnerable to pain, and even damage, especially considering that it supports the entire upper body when you sit, stand, twist, and bend.

This is why if you are a victim of back pain, it is recommended that you know your alternatives before seeing an orthopedic surgeon. We can help you determine the exact cause of the pain and prescribe an appropriate non-surgical treatment and pain management plan so you can avoid surgery.

Back pain treatment is often very complicated considering the complexity of the natural structure of the spine and nerves. There are two primary goals of treatment- to relieve pain and restore function.

The spinal disc often presses on a nerve root resulting as severe lower back pain, and eventually pain in rest parts of the body. This pressing normally occurs when the disc is herniated; breaks or bulges making it place intense pressure on the nerve roots or on the spinal cord.

A herniated disc occurs when the spinal disc loses its elasticity and eventually ruptures, forcing a section of it to be pushed outside its normal boundary. People who are in ages between 35 and 45 are said to be constantly involved in strenuous activity that can injure a weakened spine. Engaging in activities that require repetitive body movements such as bending, lifting, twisting, pushing, and pulling can also increase the risk. Traumatic injury due to a vehicle accident, a fall, or when you are hit in the back can also lead to a fracture in the spinal disc. Other risk factors include obesity (because extra weight puts extra pressure on the discs), and smoking which is known to contribute to disc degeneration.

A bulging disc, on the other hand, is caused by a number of things, some of which are within your control, but others are simply not very easy to prevent. The most common cause is degenerative spinal diseases due to age. As you get older, your body loses its elasticity. The membrane covering the soft tissues inside the spinal disc weakens, allowing the disc to bulge out. Other causes include arthritis in the bones of your back (vertebrae), which can cause inflammation, thereby, pushing the disc out of its normal position; a fall or injury from a vehicle accident; using improper lifting techniques, especially when dealing with heavy or large package; having extra pressure on your back due to pregnancy or obesity; and poor posture such as wearing high heels, sleeping on your stomach or slouching.

In most cases, disc pain may ease off gradually over several weeks; however, if the symptoms persist, we recommend that you call us immediately for a consultation. One of the best treatment options for both a disc that has herniated or bulged is spinal decompression therapy.

Spinal decompression therapy is an FDA-approved, non-surgical therapy that involves the use of a linear force to pull and stretch the spine using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the aim of creating negative pressure between each vertebra or pinched nerve of the spinal column. This in turn, helps promote movement of oxygen, water, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal. Spinal decompression is used to treat the following conditions that are known to be the main causes of chronic back pain: disc herniation, disc bulge, spinal stenosis, isthmic, sciatica, and other degenerative spondylolisthesis.

The end of results of spinal decompression therapy include:

  • A negative intradiscal pressure that helps promote repositioning or retraction of the bulging or herniated disc material
  • A lower pressure within the disc that results in an influx of healing nutrients, water, and oxygen into the disc
