Headaches are broadly classified as either primary or secondary. Primary headaches are benign, recurrent headaches that are not caused by any underlying disease or medical condition. My name is M.T.Shahab, M.D. As a medical physician we have helped many sufferers without medication and drugs.
The most common type of primary headache is the Migraine – a condition characterized by episodes of severe, painful headaches often accompanied by, or preceded with a number of sensory warnings. This type of headache is different from tension headache or cluster headache which we our Bergen County doctors have helped many patients with these types of headaches as well.
There are a number of different types of migraine, the most common being a classical migraine (migraine with aura) and a common migraine (migraine without aura). Though not very common or dangerous, migraines may cause significant pain and disability to a point of stopping you from carrying out your daily chores or activities.

Causes of Migraines
The exact cause of a migraine is yet to be fully understood though some doctors relate it to a brain chemical called serotonin – the chemical responsible for regulating pain in the nervous system. However, the exact role of serotonin in migraines is still under study.
Migraines are also linked to your genes. Clinical findings have found out that more that 50% of migraine patients also have close family members who also suffer from the disease.
Triggers of Migraines
It may not be very easy to identify what is triggering your migraine, especially if your headache attacks (or episodes) are linked to a number of different things. Many things have been labeled as triggers of migraines; however, the strength and significance of these relationships are still uncertain.
Emotional Triggers: Include stress, tension, excitement, depression, anxiety, and shock.
Physical Triggers: Include poor quality sleep or change in sleep patterns, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), strenuous exercise (especially if you are not used to it), tiredness, shift work, neck or shoulder tension, poor posture, and jet lag.
Environmental Triggers: Include smoking, loud noises, strong smells, bright lights, a stuffy atmosphere, flickering screens (such as a TV or computer screen), and changes in climate such as very cold temperatures or changes in humidity.
Dietary Triggers: include compromised, missed or delayed meals, dieting too fast, irregular meals, red wines, alcohol, the food addictive tyramine, dehydration, caffeine products such as tea and coffee, and specific foods like chocolate, cheese, and citrus fruit.
Medication: includes some types of sleeping tablets, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and oral contraceptives and vasodilators.
Signs and Symptoms of Migraines
The main symptom of migraine is normally an intense headache that occurs on one side of the head, mostly at the front. The pain usually occurs as a severe pulsing and throbbing sensation that gets worse when you move. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and sound, increasing pain during physical activity, and inability to perform regular activities due to pain, fatigue, and depression.
Being able to learn how to recognize the phases of a migraine will help you treat symptoms early on, and limit the duration of these painful and disruptive episodes.
