Your posture is like second nature to you, whether it is “good” or “bad”. Good posture gives adequate room for optimum distribution of force through the body so the musculoskeletal system can function properly and protect against injury and deterioration. However, poor posture has become all too common. In fact, musculoskeletal distortion in the neck and lower and upper back are all symptoms of bad posture.
It’s easy for you to sit slumped at your desk at work or stand unevenly if you are waiting in line at the grocery store. The problem is that every time you slump or stand in poor posture, you are robbing yourself of your height (among many other important functions), and with time, you are likely to lose an inch or two.

Poor posture came to be because of the nature of a patient’s physical characteristics, and more often is the result of bad habits over the years. Poor posture is frequently the reason why, no matter how many times you keep going back to the osteopath or chiropractor, your joints just seem to keep coming out of alignment causing you pain. One of the most common bad habits that cause poor posture are the incorrect ways of sitting, standing, walking, and sleeping.
Additional “bad posture” habits include driving, playing video games or sitting at your computer for long periods of time. All these factors do contribute, in one way or another, to the inability of your spine to keep its natural curve. Physically demanding jobs that require bending over for extended periods of time are also responsible for spinal fatigue.
Poor posture is caused by structural problems, which in turn cause functional problems within the body.
For example, your vertebral column (back bone) consists of numerous small bones known as vertebrae. Now if for one reason or another these small bones become misaligned, they put pressure on supporting structures between and around them, such as discs and nerves. The misaligned vertebrae also create problems with body organs because the nerves housed in the spine extend all the way to your muscles and organs, which connect them back to the brain.
This implies that if the nerve fails to transmit enough signals (or information) and energy to the relevant organs, then the organs will also fail to do their job properly.
As a result of BAD posture:
Postural distortions tend to weaken the body’s metabolism, thyroid gland, and immune system leading to fatigue, sleep problems, and decreased energy levels.
The immune system is likely to be weakened by the nerves. This may explain recurrent colds and allergies.
Patients are bound to develop some inflammation within the nerves of the upper neck because of constant pressure, resulting in breathing complications and headaches.
As a result of bad posture in your MID BACK:
Do you experience regular hypoglycemia. This could be because the nerves in mid back could be weakening your pancreas.
Your mid-back nerves may also be pinched, thereby weakening your stomach. This can explain any complaints of regular heartburn and bloating.
As a result of bad posture in your LOW BACK:
The nerves along your low back could be weakening your reproductive organs. This is when fertility issues and miscarriages become more present.
The nerves within your lumbar may be pinched, thereby leading to a weakened bladder that could be causing recurrent bladder infections.
Misalignment in lower back bones are likely going to cause intestinal issues, UTIs, and constipation. This is all in addition to having an injured postural pattern and other bodily disturbances.
In a case where your mid-back is misaligned at the position where nerves in that area lead to your stomach and lungs, you are likely to develop breathing problems, indigestion or frequent bloating, among other stomach issues.
